Interview with TheHealthyRD Pt. 1

  1. Natural approaches to gut health.

  2. Benefits of bone broth.

  3. Holistic power of fungi.

In your practice, how do you bridge the gap between traditional nutrition advice and the principles of functional medicine?

Thanks for the congratulations on my book! The central theme of the book is that there are a lot of natural approaches to healing the gut that work. These approaches are safe, effective, and sadly undiscovered by most conventional practitioners due to the heavy focus on pharmaceuticals.

Congratulations on your book! Without giving too much away, what's a central theme or message you hope readers will take away?

My new book specifically guides people how to safely use supplements to promote their own health to the best of their ability.

With the vitamin industry booming, are there specific vitamins or supplements you believe people should approach with caution or avoid altogether?

Most vitamins and supplements are exceptionally safe if you choose a reputable company. However, there are certain times that supplements should be avoided, such as if people are on warfarin. Other supplements that should largely be avoided are natural steroids for muscle enhancement.

Bone broth has been hailed as a superfood. From your expertise, what makes it so beneficial, and how should one incorporate it into their diet?

Bone broth is indeed a superfood. It is very beneficial because it is rich in vitamins, minerals, immune compounds, and also contains collagen which supports skin, gut, and joint health.

Fungi, especially cordyceps, are gaining traction for their health benefits. How do these fit into a holistic health framework, and are there any other fungi you recommend?

Fungi are fantastic. Each type of medicinal mushroom has very unique properties, such as cordyceps which promote energy, reishi which support resiliance and adaptation to stress, chaga for their immune support, and lion's mane for its neurological and brain benefits. These mushrooms can be fit into any healthy regimen and the beauty is that low amounts consistently can really provide health benefits across the board.

Many are curious about the daily routines of nutrition experts. Can you give us a glimpse into what your typical meals throughout the day look like?

My meals are very focused on nutrient-rich foods. As such, I focus on healthy protein foods like fish, grass fed meats and organ meats, antioxidant-rich vegetables, herbs, and seasonal fruits, and splurge on a bit of wild honey when I need a boost. I focus on getting collagen-rich foods too like bone broth to support my whole body.
